New Countries Added to the High-Risk Destination List

As part of monitoring the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and its impact on university travel, the decision has been made to add two additional countries to the high-risk destination list – Cyprus and Azerbaijan. Travel to or through any of these countries will require additional approval from the Chancellor/President or their designated approver.

As a reminder, the ban on university travel to or through the following countries is still in place:

  • Bahrain
  • Iran
  • Iraq
  • Israel
  • Jordan
  • Kuwait
  • Lebanon
  • Oman
  • Palestinian Territories (West Bank and Gaza)
  • Qatar
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Syria
  • The United Arab Emirates (UAE)
  • Yemen

For a full list of countries requiring the high-risk travel approval, please refer to the PSC’s Travel Pre-Approvals page

Please check back regularly to be notified of changes to this list. The volatile nature of the situation may require the university to change travel requirements with little or no notice.

If you have already booked upcoming university-related travel to one or through any of the countries listed above in the near term, please evaluate options to reroute, reschedule, or cancel your plans. Reach out to Christopherson Business Travel at 1.855.462.8885 or your campus international resources for assistance.

Several airlines have already canceled or suspended flights in the region, and international travel advisories continue to change rapidly. For the most current information, travelers should consult the U.S. Department of State Travel Advisories.

Personal Travel Reminder

We understand that individuals may choose to travel to these countries for personal reasons. However, please be aware:

  • The University of Colorado cannot protect, evacuate, or support you during personal travel.
  • All financial, logistical, medical and evacuation costs are the personal responsibility of the traveler.
  • Evacuation from high-risk regions can be extremely costly and may not be possible depending on conditions.

We strongly encourage anyone considering personal international travel to countries listed above to review the U.S. Department of State Travel Advisories and to ensure you have a fully-funded, realistic plan for evacuation or emergency travel, if needed.

If you have questions, please reach out to your respective campus international travel resources.
