Spring 2019 Startup Stats: Portal visits nearly double with two-week start

The beginning of a new semester is a busy time for students, faculty and university staff at the University of Colorado. It is also especially busy for student portals that support many student activities, including adding or dropping a course, accessing financial information, viewing class schedule details and more.

During the spring 2019 semester start, CU’s campuses started on two separate weeks, differing from the previous spring semester, with Boulder being the first campus to start on Jan. 14 and Colorado Springs, Denver, and Anschutz starting Jan. 22.

From Nov. 6 through Jan. 29, nearly 850 hours were put into the overall project from UIS Student Systems, Portal and Mobile, and ECS and IAM teams in collaboration with campus partners. This effort was to ensure students had a seamless experience during the first few weeks of school.

From Jan. 14-25, CU students logged 801,467 portal visits across all four campuses, not including CU employees. Having start days in different weeks spreads out the number of portal uses over two weeks, as the infographic below shows.

As UIS has improved and streamlined its processes, the number of hours needed to prepare for the school year has steadily declined.
