HB 16-1408 Signing Attended by CU Anschutz Medical Campus Officials

HB 16-1408, Cash Fund Allocations For Health-related Programs, has been signed by Gov. Hickenlooper. The event, which took place on May 4, was attended by CU Cancer Center Director, Dan Theodorescu, MD, PhD; CU School of Medicine Dean John J. Reilly, Jr., MD and Jane Schumaker, Executive Director of University Physicians Inc. In 1998, the Master Tobacco Settlement Agreement (MSA) awarded $206 billion to address the negative health effects of tobacco use in the United States. Colorado has received more than $1.5 billion of the funding. HB 16-1408 establishes a new formula for the allocation of the annual MSA payment received by the state as part of the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement. The new allocation is favorable to the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and also allocates $1.7M to the campus for important cancer research.  Read more about this event and the impact of the bill in the Colorado Cancer Blogs.
