Congratulations to alumnae Laura Schwab and Jennifer Dean, whose names were drawn to win iPads upon completing the CU alumni survey last summer.

Schwab and Dean are outstanding examples of our successful alumni, their contributions to our communities, and the value of a CU degree.

Schwab graduated from the Beth El School of Nursing in 1963. At the time, the school was independent from CU, but became a part of CU Colorado Springs in 1997.

“Former graduates were all grandfathered into the program, so we all became alumni of CU,” Schwab explained. “We celebrated our 50th reunion with the students about three years ago. It was very wonderful, so I have very fond memories of CU even though I didn’t go to campus as such. I am very proud to be an alumna.”

Dean graduated from the CU Boulder College of Arts and Sciences in film studies in 1998. Her career is with Arcade Edit, a film and television editorial house based in Los Angeles and New York.

“I am so proud of my experience at CU (film department), and I can't tell you how many times I have run into CU alums working in post-production in L.A. and N.Y. – it’s great to have that film connection!” Dean said. “I am certain my studies with legendary filmmakers Phil Solomon and Stan Brakhage, along with the intense film studies classes of Bruce Kawin and Melinda Barlow, landed me in the job I am in today.”

The survey results, announced in August, gave us valuable insights into our graduates’ lives after CU. We received 15,225 responses, a 6 percent response rate, well above the 3 percent or so we expected. Nearly two-thirds earned a bachelor’s degree from a CU campus and another 20 percent earned a master’s. The remainder earned doctorates or professional degrees in medicine and law. Some 4 percent had multiple degrees from CU.

Among the many insights, we found CU alumni are extremely satisfied with the education they received, with more than 95 percent reporting they were “very satisfied” or “somewhat satisfied.” More than two-thirds of those were in the “very satisfied” category.
