The side effects of helping: Correctional health care professionals face burnout and trauma

What do we do when the professionals helping others need help themselves? Correctional health care professionals (CHPs) are increasingly at risk of developing trauma, moral injury, burnout and other negative effects from the stressors of their work environment. UCCS Assistant Professor Stephanie Gangemi, Ph.D., LCSW, CCHP and Camille Dysart, LSW, UCCS social work program alumna and social worker with the Department of Corrections, examined the prevalence of moral injury among CHPs and the challenges accompanying CHP work in a 2024 study.
