CU Statement on the CU Board of Regents' Decision to Appeal the Concealed Weapons Ruling

On Friday, June 25, the University of Colorado Board of Regents voted to appeal a lower court decision that said the university had violated state law by keeping a concealed weapons ban in place on all four of its campuses. During a regular, public meeting held at CU-Boulder's East Campus, the board voted 5-4 to appeal the case before the Colorado Supreme Court. Before the regents voted, they held a public discussion, and listened to comments by faculty, students and several members of the public.

Following is a statement issued by the university after the regents voted:

While individual members of the University of Colorado Board of Regents, like members of society, have differing views on the issue of concealed carry of weapons, the decision to appeal the case is about the board’s authority to govern CU campuses as outlined in the Colorado Constitution. The board believes it is in the best position to make decisions about the learning environment on CU’s campuses.
