Colorado chapter of Tuskegee Airmen, CU Boulder team up for $50,000 scholarship

The University of Colorado's School of Education and the only Colorado chapter of Tuskegee Airmen Inc. have teamed up to fund a $50,000 scholarship endowment in the name of democracy, equality and keeping history alive.

The Colorado chapter of Tuskegee Airmen Inc. was established in 1973 and named after the late Denver aviator Hubert L. "Hooks" Jones.

The chapter is dedicated to honoring the accomplishments and keeping the legacy alive of African-Americans who participated in aircrew, ground crew and operations support training in the Army Air Corps during World War II. There were 19 original Tuskegee Airmen with a Colorado connection.

"There are only five of these gentleman left, and they're in their 90s," said chapter President Mark Dickerson,
