Beginning in early September, new commodity codes will be available in Marketplace, primarily for professional services and information technology (IT) purchases.

Commodity codes play an important role in helping the Procurement Service Center (PSC) route and process requisitions efficiently. The addition of these new codes will provide more specific options for commonly purchased goods and services, helping the PSC better balance workload and expedite requisition processing.

The new commodity codes will also provide greater insight into what the University is purchasing. More detailed purchasing data will help the PSC identify opportunities to leverage the University's collective buying power, including potential enterprise agreements, master service agreements, and other strategic sourcing opportunities that may improve pricing, terms, and the overall purchasing experience.

Choosing the Right Commodity Code Matters

When creating a requisition in Marketplace, selecting the commodity code that most accurately reflects the goods or services being purchased helps ensure your requisition is routed appropriately and can reduce processing delays. This applies to both the new commodity codes and those already available in Marketplace.

As with existing commodity codes, each new commodity code will have a corresponding How to Buy page [3] in the PSC Knowledgebase. These pages will provide purchasing guidance and helpful information specific to that commodity.

A complete list of the new commodity codes is provided below. These codes are expected to be available in Marketplace.

As you create requisitions after the new codes become available, please take a moment to select the commodity code that best matches your purchase. The right commodity code helps get your requisition to the right place faster—and gives the PSC better information to identify purchasing solutions that can benefit the University as a whole.
