University of Colorado Hospital has earned a place on U.S. News & World Report’s prestigious Honor Roll of the top 20 hospitals in America — the first Colorado institution ever to garner that distinction.

The 2016 ranking was released late Monday MT.

The Aurora hospital also received national recognition for 10 of its specialties, including a ranking of No. 2 in pulmonology, shared with medical partner institution National Jewish Health.

While UCH has for years been the most-acclaimed Colorado health-care facility on the annual list, the No. 20 place on the honor roll takes it to a whole new level.

Liz Concordia — president and CEO of UCH's parent agency, UCHealth — said she believes the recognition will help the hospital in several ways, including the ability to recruit top specialists from out of state and the ability to keep patients with complex needs from leaving the state to seek care.

“I think it clearly signifies something significant for us,” Concordia said. “I think there are many patients who could potentially be referred out of the state because they don’t recognize the gem we have in our state.”

In addition to its place on the honor roll and its second-place ranking for pulmonology, University Hospital received the following specialty rankings:

14: Diabetes and endocrinology.
15: Kidney disorders.
22: Cancer.
22: Gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery.
32: Gynecology.
36: Geriatrics.
42: Cardiology and heart surgery.
42: Orthopedics.
43: Neurology and neurosurgery.

Craig Hospital of Englewood was the only other area hospital to earn a specialty ranking, coming in seventh in the country for its rehabilitation care.

U.S. News ranked the top general care hospitals in Colorado as:

1: University of Colorado Hospital.
2: Porter Adventist Hospital of Denver.
3: Medical Center of the Rockies of Loveland.
4: Penrose-St. Francis Health Services of Colorado Springs.
5: Poudre Valley Hospital of Fort Collins.
6 (tie): Memorial Hospital of Colorado Springs.
6 (tie): St. Mary’s Hospital and Medical Center of Grand Junction.
6 (tie): Sky Ridge Medical Center of Lone Tree.
