Help employees with new names avoid IRS identity crises this tax season

Employees have been put on notice: If they legally changed their names with the Social Security Administration in 2014, they must work with other entities that pay or tax them—including their department’s business partner—to ensure that change is reflected on other documents.

While Employee Services is sending employees regular reminders about name changes this winter, you can help ensure no one slips through the cracks by reminding employees to cross check names on their Social Security cards and within their pay advices, in the employee portal.

Employees also must separately contact the firm that manages their retirement savings accounts to change the names on their accounts and account statements. You can refer employees to CU’s plan vendors’ contact page to connect them to these firms. Note: Any name change updates you make within the system will automatically be sent to the vendors who administer CU’s medical benefits.
