Charge

The Executive Steering Committee is comprised of senior executives and principal stakeholders who are committed to the project and have the authority to make policy decisions that have department, college, campus, and institutional-wide impacts.

This Committee also provides input to the Executive Sponsors on project issues escalated by the Project Director. Typically, an issue is presented to the Steering Committee when the issue impacts the project budget, timeline, or institutional policies. Issues impacting more than one department or organizational unit may also be presented to the Steering Committee for resolution.

The Steering Committee is authorized to make decisions as appropriate to the authority of the members and the charge to the Committee. Since the likely membership of the Committee will be at a Vice President and Vice Chancellor level, the Steering Committee will be authorized to make almost all decisions related to project implementation. There may be some decisions that must be escalated to the President’s Executive Committee.

Membership

The Student Information System is a complex system that touches many parts of the University with a significant number and diversity of stakeholders. As such the Executive Steering Committee needs broad representation at the executive level of the University.

Relationships

The Executive Steering Committee will escalate issues to the President’s Executive Committee as needed through the Vice Presidents. The SIS project advisory and working teams will escalate issues/decisions to the Executive Steering Committee that are beyond their authority and charge of the teams. The campus chancellors may choose to create campus steering committees or advisory groups to guide campus decisions related to implementation.

Typical Responsibilities

1. Provides advice and input to the Executive Sponsors
2. Sets direction and defines project goals
3. Defines project ownership
4. Resolves conflicts (e.g. resource, requirements conflicts)
5. Monitors the status and progress of the implementation, including the project budget and funding
6. Provides feedback to the Project Director and implementation team
7. Communicates with campus groups to champion ongoing project support and sponsorship
8. Makes decisions as appropriate to the authority of the members and to the charge to the committee by the Executive Sponsor. Escalate issues and decisions to the President’s Executive Committee as necessary to gain approval and acceptance on those issues or decisions
9. Maintains a basic understanding of the system
